Aunty Lu & I Committed A Crime

from: Kainoa Miller

In 2007, during our taurima family reunion down in Nuhaka, I helped Aunty Lu commit a crime.

We were on our way out of Nuhaka, heading back up to Hamilton with Nanny Tu in tow. Nanny Tu at the time was traveling with her cat (as she often did). And even though Nanny Tu was quiet, her cat sure as hell made up for it.

The stupid thing wouldn't stop crying, scratching, and clawing, desperate to escape the car. Aunty Lu was at her wits end... so she jammed the car into a parking spot just outside a bakery in Wairoa, reached into her purse, grabbed a Benadryl, and told me to shove it down the cat's throat while Nanny Tu wasn't looking. I did what I was told.

Nanny Tu marveled at how calm the cat was, and how quickly the cat fell asleep. Aunty Lu said she must have tired herself out, Nana hmphed in agreement. Aunty Lu smiled and winked at me, and I couldn't help but laugh. The cat didn't wake up until the next morning but the ride home was bliss. Worth it.
